2 AM
In the wee hour
Coming out of a bar
Down an alley of haze
I saw a face
I checked my watch
And struck a match
For it was too cold
And I was not so bold
Still I ventured forth
Not knowing that it was the fourth
The fatal step was taken
On a promise that should not have been broken
Trudging along ever more drearily
Wanting to see that face clearly
I had gone too deep into the maze
Before realizing the folly of my ways
It was no longer misty
And the path that lay before me wasn’t twisty
Yet my eyes glistened
When I saw what the moon emblazoned
Yonder the graves had grown green
Painting a ghastly scene
I saw the name on the tombstone
And remembered the telephone
My knees gave way
Knowing I couldn’t hold sway
I was lost
Amidst a myriad of thoughts
Memories underneath a shade
Now buried with a spade
Fleeting images danced in my eyes
Amidst a flame of cries
