Shadows in a Mirror—A Poem on Farewell and Reflection
Poetry

Shadows in a Mirror

As the morning dew
Rolled down the blade of grass
And the rays of the morning sun
Began to embrace the dawn mother

A muffled footstep echoed down the hall
Slowly walking away from the centre of it all
Hands in his coat and a gait that was slow
He stepped out in the morning glow

As his eyes flickered across
To the post of steel
And the lonely figure
Lying on top of the wheel

A smile struck across his face and
He increased his pace
The memories became a collage
Only for him to find it a mirage

As he gazed up at the sky
He saw a cloud that was black
And the raindrops fell down
A drizzle down his cheek

He took one last look
At the place that always shook
A throng of cheers and whistles
In the lake that never fizzled

As a kettle went off
In a faraway kitchen
And the sprinklers started spraying
His finger lifted the sleeve of his shirt

To check the watch for one final time
He reached in and took out a single dime
The first one he had earned
Amidst the bridges that were burned

As he poured one last drink
In his office
And the final dregs were downed
He left the dime beside the glass

Shutting the door on his way out
Victorious in his final bout
Walking off into the sunrise of reel
Knowing he was not just another spoke in the wheel.

I exist so I won't be forgotten
